Ashtanga Yoga is a powerful method for personal transformation. Yoga was created as a path to attain personal freedom and happiness yet so often is taught and practiced in a way that reinforces our limiting negative thinking and movement patterns rather than finding ways to move beyond them. So often people get caught up in ‘doing’ their yoga practice.

In contrast in this retreat we will look at how you can cultivate the experience of ‘being present’ in your yoga practice to enable it to become a moving mediation so that its true power can be realised.

We will explore ways in which you can create a powerful, nourishing, relaxing and restorative Ashtanga Yoga practice, thereby creating the conditions to achieve greater levels of physical and mental strength, flexibility and, of course, happiness!

Through breath, posture, philosophy, psychology, meditation, theory, practical exploration and bodywork Andy and Annabelle will help you develop the tools & techniques to change and transform your yoga experience and practice.

This retreat is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike, whether you are familiar with Ashtanga Yoga or experiencing this beautiful practice for the first time.

Andy Gill

andy-gill-3  Andy has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over 10 years. He is a 3rd Series    practitioner and uses his extensive experience and knowledge to teach primary, 2nd  and 3rd Series asana practice in the Ashtanga method. Andy began teaching through  an apprenticeship with Gingi Lee at The Shala in South London. His personal study  has continued through practice in Mysore and in particular with in-depth training  with John and Lucy Scott. Andy has continued to study with John Scott and has  subsequently taught with him on several foreign retreats. As a Certified Yoga teacher  holding the E-RYT certification Andy is one of only a handful of teachers worldwide  to be awarded the John Scott Yoga 500 Hr Teacher Training certification.

As a teacher and a practicing Life Coach Andy understands and respects the needs of  the individual student, placing their needs at the heart of his teaching. He brings an  informed and non-dogmatic approach to teaching Ashtanga whilst remaining  consistent and true to the traditional method.

Andy is passionate about teaching Ashtanga in the traditional Mysore space and he draws upon his experience both as a teacher and coach to provide a supportive, nurturing and inspiring space in which he can facilitate the personal growth of his students through their practice.

Annabelle Haberkorn-Gill annabelle-haberkorn-2

Annabelle has been practicing and teaching yoga since 2003. She completed her Teacher & Advanced Teacher’s Training Courses with the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, complementing her studies over the years by attending various other trainings including Yin Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Meditation & Pranayama.

Her interest in anatomy, physiology and movement led her to study bodywork, firstly in London and later in New York where she studied at the Swedish Institute, completing a 16 month full-time Massage Therapy program in western and eastern bodywork, and graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Massage Therapy. Annabelle currently has a busy massage practice in central London and Croydon.

Her massage work focuses on assisting clients with relieving acute and chronic pain, releasing muscular tension, recovering from injuries including scar work, increasing flexibility, encouraging change in detrimental postural habits & developing healthier breathing patterns. In the context of the yoga retreat at La Balie, Annabelle will use massage and hands-on soft tissue manipulations to help you enhance and refine your individual yoga practice and help you move intelligently and safely.


Daily Yoga

Your day begins with early morning meditation/pranayama followed by morning practice after which we’ll serve a delicious and nourishing brunch. After lunch there will be plenty of time to relax, swim in the beautiful salt water pool, or take a relaxing treatment with Annabelle. Later in the afternoon we’ll hold a series of workshops enabling you to delve further into the key elements of Ashtanga yoga.

Daily practice will take place either in our beautiful studio with stunning views over rolling countryside or outside in the meadow where practice will end with the sound of the ancient church bells rolling gently through the valley, as they have for hundreds of years.

Afternoon Workshops
Your retreat includes four afternoon workshops with a free afternoon on Thursday when we’ll visit the beautiful Bastide town of Monpazier to see the market and have lunch.

The workshops are designed to support the retreat theme of building a healing practice for life and will allow you to delve deeply into the key elements of Ashtanga Yoga enabling you to cultivate supportive, restorative and healing qualities in your practice.

Our workshops exploration will include;

  • Cultivating a meditative and present approach to practice
  • Developing body and joint stability to attain greater flexibility and strength
  • Refining your body movement to find healthier and more sustainable pain free approaches
  • Restorative and healing approaches to practice



La Balie is a collection of beautiful 16th Century farm buildings three of which have been converted into light and airy cottages containing a total of eight charming bedrooms each with their own luxury bathroom. Each cottage has its own sitting room, fully equipped kitchen, satellite TV and WiFi.

Great food and wine are a core part of life at La Balie!

We offer a wide variety of delicious and healthy menus at La Balie where we combine Mediterranean inspiration with the spices and herbs of Asia and the Middle East. All our ingredients are sourced from local markets or suppliers, as are our excellent selection of wines. Your retreat will focus on a healthy vegetarian diet and includes all your meals except for one lunch and one dinner which we’ll have at local restaurants and for which we’ll ask you to share the cost.

Menus at La Balie are tailored for each event but are always innovative, delicious and beautifully presented. We’ll also be serving a selection of delicious wines sourced from our local vineyards


After a dynamic morning yoga session and a delicious brunch, there will be plenty of time to relax by the pool, swim, read and visit the pretty medieval villages surrounding La Balie. Included in your retreat is an evening visit to the pretty market town of Villereal where we’ll have dinner and a morning visit to the beautiful bastide village of Monpazier where you’ll experience the delights of a traditional French market and where we’ll have lunch.

Travelling to La Balie

La Balie is in the Lot-et-Garonne, 50km south east of Bergerac. There are several ways to travel to La Balie – by air, train or car. For this retreat we suggest you fly into Bergerac airport as we’ll be providing a free transfer from the airport to La Balie.

The recommended flights for this retreat are:
June 18th 2017:       Ryan Air FR8592       departs London Stansted at 12.15       arrives Bergerac at 15.00
June 24th 2017:       Ryan Air FR8593      departs Bergerac at 15.25                      arrives London Stanstead at 16.10

The following airlines also fly directly to Bergerac – British Airways from London City, Flybe from Southampton and Edinburgh and Jet 2 from Leeds Bradford

Another option is take one of the many flights to Bordeaux, and take a train to Bergerac where you could join the provided transfer to the retreat. Or a train from Bordeaux to Monsempron-Libos (1 change at Agen), from where we can arrange a taxi.

For those of you who prefer to take the train, there is a TGV direct from Paris to Agen which takes 4.5 hours and from where we can arrange a taxi to collect you (at an additional price), or from where you can connect onto a local train to Monsempron-Libos.

Hiring a car
La Balie is set within 10 acres of garden, meadow and woodland and is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside. The peaceful, rural setting means there are no villages within walking distance – if you would like to explore the local towns and villages we recommend you hire a car at Bergerac airport.  Most of the major car hire companies are represented at the airport and a good comparison/booking site can be found at


Prices and Deposits

A shared room with twin beds costs £975 per person
A private room costs £1,350 – please note we have a limited number of private rooms available so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Non yoga partners are welcome to join us for an additional fee of £685

Prices include:
6 nights accommodation
All meals and wine except for one lunch and one dinner (which we’ll have at local restaurants and where we’ll ask you to share the cost)
2 daily yoga sessions
Airport transfers (for recommended flights)


A non-refundable deposit of £300 for a shared room and £400 for a private room is required to reserve your place on the retreat. The balance of your course fee is payable 6 weeks before the start of the course (on or before May 5, 2017).

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend our retreat. We’ll refund you the the full amount you’ve paid minus your deposit of £300/400 if you cancel 45 days before the start of the retreat. If you cancel within 45 days of the retreat, we won’t be able to refund you unless we are able to resell your place. If we are able to fill your place we’ll refund your payment minus your deposit.

We strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive travel insurance, including cancellation insurance, when you book the retreat.
