Summer Concerts

 MUSIC AT LA BALIE

We’ve chosen Hommage as the theme for 2018’s concerts from the acclaimed British pianist James Lisney. The ….hommage series honours composers, pianists, the piano and, in the opening recital, Karl Stice, our piano technician, with the inclusion of the world premiere of his composition – Marmandaise Rag!

In June we pay hommage to the music of France with an evening dedicated to French composers; in July to Fryderyk Chopin and in August to you, our audience, with a final concert of favourites from this summer’s programme.

We hope you’ll join us to hear music ranging from Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue, much-loved Chopin’s waltzes, Debussy’s Hommage à Rameau and Clair de lune in this his 100th anniversary year and of course Liszt’s beautiful and inspirational Bénédiction de Dieu dans la Solitude.  As usual, the second recital in each month will be held by candlelight in what is now a La Balie tradition!

“With a remarkable varied sound, springing from a unique sensitivity, James Lisney succeeded in holding the attention of the audience throughout, not allowing a moments escape into other thoughts, attracting them with permanent internal movement and intense artistic feelings. A truly original musical personality.”  Actualitatea Muzicala, Bucharest

“I have nothing but praise for James Lisney’s piano playing; he combines velvet touch and a wide range of colour with complete understanding of phrasing and dynamic shading. This is someone who can really give the mechanical box of wires and wood a singing soul.” The Telegraph

“Lisney impressed with his clarity of sound, his ability to elucidate the shape of the music and to stand back a little from it as if in modest deference. Exquisitely controlled performances.”  The Times
